fullsizerender-1Your Art can’t afford to make you money…she is timid and delicate deserving of a pedestal. Although she is tough enough to rip your heart out and serve it to you…treat her right and she will care for your soul all the days of your life. Abuse her and put her to work and she will turn on you, run and hide until she feels it is safe for her to return.

We are each born as creative beings, from the most pristine of painters to the famous financial spreadsheet makers, we each express our creativity is ways that differ as greatly as our fingerprints. Your art, your creativity can be a fickle species, who at the first sign of in-congruence to your authentic self, chooses to dig her heels in and make you work for every inch she gives you. If you are like me and you create art, art that brings you joy that you can barely contain, then may I suggest that you take the eloquent advice of Liz Gilbert (oh ya, we’re tight I can call her Liz…no, no not really :))

...to yell at your creativity, saying “You must earn money for me!” is sort of like yelling at a cat; it has no idea what you’re talking about, and all you’re doing is scaring it away, because you’re making really loud noises and your face looks weird when you do that.

What I am essentially saying is sometimes or for a time it may be necessary to keep the day job and let your art be what it has always wanted to be…free…a bonus to the bundle of awesome that is you. If you are one of the lucky ones killing it at financing your life with your art then keep up the good work my friend you have the Magic figured out!! For the rest of us I’m not saying suffer your day job or do any work that torments you, what I am saying is that to ultimately take the pressure off your creativity to support you and your family, create and cultivate multiple (stable) income streams. And no I am not suggesting that we all become internet gurus although that would be awesome, what I am asking is that you entertain the idea of maintaining some steady income as your creative self plays and enjoys the freedom of simply being. In that joy masterpieces will be created, along with huge piles of crap…remember that each piece you create, good or not so good allows you to learn something new about your craft and about yourself.

At this point if you are thinking of clicking off this page because you are one of the many who believe they are non-artistic, completely incapable of creating anything artful or creative, then I beg you to remember that there was a time, not so long ago, when I believed the same to be true of myself…I couldn’t even draw stick people…and now regardless of what I actually create and who thinks what of my work, I consider myself an artist, a purveyor of creative works. I feed my soul with joy and whimsy and in return I feel whole and completely my Self. So keep reading and remember that you were born a creative being and perhaps you have yet to uncover your creative joy…to that I quote the indelible words of Cole Porter…EXPERIMENT! Ask questions, make mistakes, purposefully make crap…and enjoy every fucking minute of it!! And don’t for one second ask anything of your art except that is simply exist…and if you are like me, the beautiful, creative, joyful and whimsical by-products of this venture into creating for the sake of creating may just actually make you a little side money 🙂

untitled-design-4I recently gave my day-job boss my “trust your gut” piece and she affectionately said “oh…is this what you’re doing as your side job…art?” To which I responded very succinctly “No, this is a by-product of the joy I feel from the act of exploring my side job!” I chose not to share with her that my actual side hustle, the day job I will affectionately refer to as my pocket filler, is still a work in progress…work that will, in time, allow me to leave my current job that does not fill my cup but drains it. She is a caring woman with a high position in a well-established bureaucratic organization. She does the best she can with what she has, as we all do, and I respect her deeply for that; I simply have decided it is not where my talents and skills are best suited. I know she wants the best for me and in her own way hopes that I find a path in life that is soul filling as well as pocket filling.

How I see it is, that while my art lovingly fills my soul, I dare not to ask it to also fill my pockets. That job will happily be done by coaching and supporting others and by sharing my story and insights with the world…until that time (in the very near future) when I can devote my entire self to work that fills me and allows me to feel whole I will work diligently towards what I truly want. Each action I contemplate, each step I take must pass the “will this move me towards (or away from) what I REALLY want” filter and from this I confidently recommend to each and every one of you to take time, like really devote actual time to giving serious thought to what you REALLY want.

I recently read a meme (and yes memes are going to change the world!) that said this…

You have $86,400 in your account and someone stole $10 from you, would you be upset and throw all of the $86,390 away in hopes of getting back at the person that took your $10? Or move on and live? Right, move on and live. See, we have 86,400 seconds in every day so don’t let someone’s negative 10 seconds ruin the rest of the 86,390. Don’t sweat the small stuff, life is bigger than that!”

I say that you are bigger and better than that! And when you are the person stealing 10 seconds from your day with negativity and toxic thoughts..don’t chase yourself down the path of negativity, wasting your remaining 86,390 seconds looking for WHY, S.T.O.P...Stop, Take a few deep breaths, Observe and reflect then Proceed.  Reflect on what parts of your life bring you ultimate joy and happiness and then devise beautiful plans to do more of that. If your pocket filler is a soul sucker, it may be time for some deep reflecting, reconnecting and recreation of Self. Be patient and kind to yourself, remember nothing can happen before it can…your job is to keep doing the work and to diligently face and step towards want you REALLY want, leaving behind everything else.

As you read this, quickly calculate how many second you have left today to make a huge difference in your life (calculator may be required :)). Now S.T.O.P listen to your heart, to your art, it knows what to do next.

Artfully Yours,

Dionne
